1 Palm Wood Jasper PWJ Palm Wood Jasper formed when a tree died and was buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater permeated the wood, replacing the original organic matter and turning the wood to stone. The main mineral is silica, but trace elements in the silica impart a variety of colors to the Palm Wood Jasper. This stone is actually a fossil, the name refers to the structure of the wood resembles that of modern palms, although it may or may not be closely related to them. This wood is the petrified remains of trees that grew on the Gulf Coastal Plain during the Oligocene Epoch, around 30 million years ago. At that time the shore of the Gulf of Mexico was further north than it is now so the wood is usually found in the more northern areas of the state, particularly the Toledo Bend area. These deposits also extend into Louisiana and Mississippi. Of all the petrified wood found in Texas, petrified palmwood Jasper is the most common. For a lovely article with more, go here. Tree trunks were buried under several hundred yards of sediment. Over the course of time, the Palm Wood Jasper was replaced by cryptocrystalline quartz largely chalcedony and jasper. During the replacement process by silica carried in underground waters even the most minute details of the woody structure were preserved. This is actually a pseudomorph chalcedony that replaces the palm wood Jasper. Therefore Palm Wood Jasper is actually a member of the chalcedony family with a hardness of 6 to 7. View

4 Peanut Wood PWO Peanut wood Jasper is petrified wood, generally of black color with numerous borings, which were made by a marine wood-boring bivalve, Teredo. This petrified wood was called peanut wood by the first people who found it because they obviously thought that the light-colored areas resembled peanuts. These light-colored areas are what used to be boreholes in the original wood. Before the wood was petrified, it was washed into the ocean as driftwood. It was then attacked by small marine shellfish called "Teredo" ...another name for these little clams is "shipworm". They bore a small tunnel into the wood and eventually, the entire piece can be riddled with boreholes. When the wood became waterlogged, it then sank to the bottom of the ocean and settled into the mud. The boreholes then filled with the light-colored sediment and then began to petrify. It is found along the edges of the Kennedy Ranges about 100 miles inland from the coastal town of Carnarvon, Western Australia. The age is Cretaceous which makes it around 70 million years old. View
