Agate is the name given to numerous microcrystalline varieties of banded chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz group. Agates have a trigonal crystal structure and a hardness of 7. Occurring in nodular masses in volcanic lava rocks, it forms in concentric layers and fills cavities in the host rock. COLOR: It is found in many colors including black, grey, brown, red, green, pink, yellow, and blue with a translucent or opaque appearance and interesting patterns. MEANING: The name Agates comes from the river Achates in Sicily, where Agates were found in ancient times. SOURCE: Most exceptional stones come from Brazil and Uruguay. BIRTHSTONE: Agate is a June birthstone and a mystical birthstone for September. METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES: Agate promotes good fortune, concentration, and goodwill. It also aids in overcoming fear, limitations along with eliminating bad luck. TREATMENTS: Generally Agate is natural. Sometimes it may be dyed or bleached to enhance the depth and vividness of the colors.
